A large above-ground waste tank that a restroom trailer, a temporary fixture or a site's plumbing drains into. It buys you capacity between pump-outs, which on a multi-day event or a sewer-less site is the whole game.
The most common use is extending a restroom trailer. A trailer's onboard tank is sized for an evening, not a three-day festival. Tying it into a 500 or 1,000 gallon holding tank turns a nightly pump-out into a single scheduled service, which is both cheaper and less disruptive.
The second use is a site with no sewer connection at all — a raw lot, a ranch, a park build. A holding tank plus a scheduled pump route is often the only legal way to run real fixtures there.
Placement is gravity-dependent. The tank has to sit at or below the level of what drains into it, with a reasonably short hose run. Sites that slope the wrong way need a pump, which is an extra line item worth catching in the quote rather than on delivery day.
Waste disposal has to go to a permitted facility. Any supplier quoting suspiciously cheap pumping on a large tank is worth a question about where it goes. That is your liability as much as theirs.
