What actually happens on a service visit, how often you need one, and why service frequency explains almost every price difference between two quotes.
If two quotes for the same unit differ by fifty dollars a month, the difference is almost always service frequency. It is the most consequential and least discussed line on a portable sanitation quote.
Understanding what a service visit includes, and how often you actually need one, is the difference between comparing prices and comparing products.
What a service visit includes
- Pumping the holding tank
- Fresh water and deodorizing chemical charge
- Interior wash-down of surfaces
- Restocking toilet paper
- Restocking soap and towels on handwashing units
- A quick condition check — door, latch, vent, level
Not every supplier does all six. A pump-and-go is cheaper and it shows by day four. Ask specifically whether the visit includes an interior wash and a chemical charge, or only pumping.

Why Central Texas summer changes the math
Heat accelerates everything in a holding tank. From May through September a unit sitting in full sun runs well over a hundred degrees inside, and the deodorizing chemistry that comfortably lasts a week in March does not last a week in August.
On a full crew or a busy public placement, adding a second weekly service visit costs less than adding a second unit and produces a noticeably better result. That is one of the few genuinely easy calls in this category.
Placement helps too. A unit under partial shade runs meaningfully cooler than one in open sun. It is free and it is worth thinking about for thirty seconds at delivery.
Multi-day events: service, do not over-order
The instinct on a three-day festival is to order more units. The correct answer is usually the same unit count with overnight servicing between event days.
Get the service window written into the quote with a specific time, and make sure the supplier has a truck route to each cluster that does not cross public areas. On a large site, that route is something to plan at the same time as the placement map, not afterwards.
The access problem
A service visit that cannot happen is still billed in most contracts. The three reasons visits fail are a locked gate with no code, a unit blocked by staged material or parked vehicles, and soft ground the truck cannot cross.
All three are preventable with one conversation at delivery. Give the supplier a contact who can open a gate, agree where the unit sits, and confirm the truck approach.

No. A unit delivered Thursday or Friday and picked up Monday needs no service visit in between. That is why weekend event pricing looks different from monthly construction pricing, which bundles four weekly visits.
Why is one quote cheaper per month?

Almost always service frequency. A monthly rate bundling four weekly visits and one bundling two visits are different products at the same headline price. Ask how many service visits are included before comparing any two monthly rates.
